Rhinoplasty

Have you ever considered wanting to change the shape of your nose? Do you wish you could breathe better through your nose and not rely on mouth-breathing?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure whereby the shape and size of the nose is altered to address an aesthetic or functional/breathing concern. Frequent concerns are a large dorsal hump, lack of nasal tip refinement, crooked appearance or overall large size that is not in balance with the rest of the face. Rhinoplasty for cosmetic concerns can safely be combined during other procedures to improve nasal airflow such as turbinate reduction, septoplasty or sinus surgery.

Closed vs. Open Rhinoplasty: What’s the Difference?

In a closed rhinoplasty, all of the incisions are hidden within the nasal cavity itself, so there is no visible scar. Typically closed rhinoplasties are used for more subtle changes in dorsal profile and tip refinement. Post operative swelling tends to be less.

In an open rhinoplasty, there is one external incision that is made in between the nostrils in addition to hidden internal incisions. An open approach is typically used for more severe changes, such as a large dorsal hump, revision surgeries or extensive tip work. This approach allows for extreme precision and generally the external scar is essentially imperceptible at 6 months post-procedure. In general, the post-operative swelling is more pronounced in the first 3 months after surgery.

Revision Rhinoplasty/Rib Rhinoplasty

For some who have already undergone one nasal surgery, a second or revision may be pursued for either functional or cosmetic purposes. Both Drs. Pham and Goodrich are well versed in revision rhinoplasties. Often times during revision rhinoplasty, cartilage from another source (ear, rib, etc.) may need to be harvested in order to achieve your desired outcome.

What can I expect before and after rhinoplasty?

  • Avoid blood thinning medications, such as NSAIDs and over-the-counter supplements, 2 weeks prior to surgery.

After:

  • In general, there will be an external cast and possibly an internal splint which are removed 1 week post op.
  • Typically recommend limiting cardiovascular activity for 2 weeks and lifting for 4 weeks post operatively.
